RESORTING TO THE COAST (OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE) TALK AND FILM

Tendring’s coastal resorts of Dovercourt, Walton, Frinton, Clacton and Jaywick Sands all became popular due to the ‘Great British seaside holiday’. It was the main reason for their popularity from the 1890s right up until present day. The Great British seaside holiday is on the rise again.

Popular local historian, David Whittle, tells the seaside story of Dovercourt and Harwich during their peak summer seasons when the Victorians would sail up from London on steamers for a day of paddling and holidaying.

David’s talk is followed by 3 x 10 minute films depicting the holiday resorts of Walton, Frinton and Clacton and promoting the tourism of the towns from the 1930s to the 1960s. They include a charming home cinefilm of a local family who used to enjoy their holidays at Walton with entertainment and games at the seaside.

This talk will be accompanied by a short introduction to the ‘Resorting to the Coast’ project which tells the story of the unique seaside history of Tendring seaside resorts. We are kindly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund: https://www.tendringcoastalheritage.org.uk
