Event Details

This presentation uses archive film to show events and happenings in Dovercourt and Harwich from 1924 to 1985.

Films from the Paul Amos collection of the 1930s and 1950s will include what Dovercourt looked like in the Jubilee year of 1935, wartime with a film of the building and placing of the Roughs Fort off Harwich in 1942, the 1953 flood, the Football Club, the new skating rink, and the summer carnival of 1959. Also the drama Hill and High Water made by pupils of Hill Secondary Modern School in 1954. A colour film made in 1975 shows the Harwich Electric Palace as discovered in a state of disrepair and moves to set up a restoration project. Many other sequences will be included, ending with bringing a large ship into harbour by pilot Roland Jacques in 1977, and the Harwich Train Ferry working in 1985 just before it closed.
